What goes into a photo shoot?

While I was out of town on the Oregon Coast last week, without cell or internet coverage. Our behind the scenes video about the making of the Cascades Raptor Center shoot we did back in January blew up on www.Gizmodo.com and a few other tech and photography related websites. We had just put the final touches on the video and had uploaded it to Vimeo. I figured I would blog about it once I got home. To my surprise it had been viewed over 5000 times in two days.

A lot goes into a full day of shooting in the studio. Our day with CRC was no exception, enjoy this behind the scenes look.

Big thanks to everyone that helped put it together.

The Eugene Ballet – All You Need is Love

The Eugene Ballet came into the studio back in Januray to shoot promo images for their show All You Need is Love.  In the course of about a week we went from  flying birds to people flying in the studio.  It always amazes me how incredibly graceful these dancers are.  I feel as if I’m a very lucky photographer to such grace and beauty in front of the lens of my camera.

Cascades Raptor Center Portrait Session

I’ve photographed many creatures…. Dogs, Cats, children of all sorts but never birds in my studio.  In January we produced a photo shoot for the Cascades Raptor Center, a local raptor rehab and education center here in Eugene, Oregon.  After a few discussions about the Raptor Center needed for images we came up with a plan.  Shoot portraits in the morning and then portraits plus action imagery in the afternoon with the birds that are used for education.   After a test shoot in December I worked out the lighting and photography details.  Over the course of the day we had about a dozen birds in the studio.  I had a crew of 4 helping me, including Vernon Williams and my good friend Micheal Ferry. Mike came down from Portland to shoot a making of video and interviews of the CRC staff.

Here is a video slideshow of some of the work we did that day.  This project is still a work in progress so stay tuned for more.  And our next shoot is already in the works for this spring…. More flying…

The best of the Oregon Bach Festival

This was the fourth year of working with the Oregon Bach Festival.  My roll as photographer for the festival has changed a bit over the years as we continue to add many excellent photographs to their library.  Now I get to concentrate on more of the highlights of the festival and less of the day to day activities.  A few of my favorite moments with Bach festival this year were, YoYo Ma both during and after his concert, Matthew Halls during rehearsal, and Helmut Rilling backstage before the final concert.  This year I delivered over a thousand images to OBF, here are a few of my top favorites for you to enjoy.

Art Show at the Eugene Airport

A portion of Solitude and Absolute Form is on display currently at the Eugene Airport.  The show run through September.  Several of the prints will then be on loan to the University of Oregon Law School.  This show brings new meaning to “you need a ticket to get in”, as the gallery is located behind security.  Thank you to the Jacobs Gallery for inviting me to show this work and for all of the help with the installation.

Lightroom Workshop was a success!

I just wanted to share some feedback about our Lightroom Workshop that was held in the studio this weekend. Thanks to all of the students for making this class a success!

“Hey, just wanted to say again how great the workshop was. Loved your relaxed style but also how much info you gave everyone. I’m anxious to put it all to work!” Jeff Collins

5×5

This last week I photographed Falon, Matt & James from the band 5×5. This shoot started out as doing some senior portraits of just Falon but turned into a fun session with entire band. They will be releasing a CD in the coming month, images from this shoot will be used in the final layout of the CD.

A little bit of solitude. Three sisters wilderness

On the heals of a very secussful artist reception for my show Solitude & Absolute Form I felt it fitting to head out and work on some new work. The dogs and headed into the Three Sisters Wilderness to a series of lakes between south and middle sister. The first night felt more like fall then summer with a good sized storm system moving through the mountains. We camped at about 7000 feet at Camp lake which is the eastern most lake in the Chambers lakes area. The second night was warm without wind and very pleasant. Over the course of three days we hiked about 20 miles, which for little Chaz was plenty. I had two optical failures, my macro lens stopped focusing at infinity and I lost a lens from my cheap sunglasses.  Otherwise a very pleasant trip.

The reception runs form 6 to 7:30 pm. This is a great opportunity to explore some of my more personal work which has taken me to some very remote locations. I look forward to seeing you there.
